Dude, muscle contraction is triggered by an electronic impulse called depolarization. If a second impulse arrives before the muscle ever relaxes it goes into tonic contraction until all the calcium in the cells will be depleted.
It takes a special form of energy called ATP to pull all the calcium away from the muscle and thus allow relaxation to occur. That's why tetanus happens either due to sever electrolyte imbalance (causes multiple depolarizations) or during very strenuous exercise when all the ATP is gone (prevents relaxation).
A heart muscle is different from striated in many different ways. Most importantly electrical action potential does not only trigger the mechanical contraction but plateaus and lasts for the whole length of it and in so doing blocks the next one from arriving.
Priapizm - is a painful long lasting erection. It's a medical emergency and is different in that it is caused by blood clotting in the vessels and obstructing the venous outflow rather than muscle contracting.
Yep, it's that hot!
Come on, Vas, it's not that complicated (once you read it the second time). It's funny many people (if asked) think it takes energy to contract muscles but most miss the fact it also takes energy to relax.
Have you ever heard the stories about dead people moving their limbs in the hospital?
The phenomenon called Rigor Mortis!
That's exactly what happens in the process of corpses becoming stiff and inflexible simply because they lack energy to relax.
P.S.: Some like it hot!
Also, my pinky glows in the dark...
You know what I've been thinking about it...I mean about what I wrote and life...not ur pinky (hope it's doing fine)...and yes it does take energy to relax.
